From Japan to Bratislava: Peter Stano on semiconductor spin qubits

After the summer, QUTE.sk and Institute of Physics SAS continue their colloQUTE series of scientific colloquia featuring leading international researchers. On 11 September, we welcomed Peter Stano, Senior Research Scientist at the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science in Japan, who presented his research on semiconductor spin qubits and quantum computing.

In his colloquium, “Quantum computation with gated semiconducting spin qubits”, Peter Stano introduced the basic principles of using electron and hole spins confined in semiconductor nanostructures as qubits for quantum computing. He discussed the manipulation and measurement of individual qubits, their interactions, and the current state of research in this rapidly developing field.

The second part of the talk focused on his research into spectral estimation, noise, and noise correlations in spin qubits. Understanding and controlling noise is one of the key challenges in developing reliable quantum technologies.

Peter Staňo is also the coordinator of the international GeMOS project, which focuses on developing germanium MOS technology for semiconductor spin qubits and quantum computing. The project brings together research groups from Slovakia, Germany, and Switzerland, reflecting the international and collaborative nature of research in this rapidly developing field.

Despite the rainy weather, the colloquium attracted a large audience of researchers and students, highlighting the strong interest in quantum technologies and semiconductor-based quantum computing. The colloquium offered the local scientific community a valuable opportunity to hear directly from a Slovak scientist working at one of Japan’s leading research institutions and to learn more about current developments in semiconductor-based quantum computing.
