colloQUTE Lecture Explored the LUMI-Q VLQ Quantum Computer and Its Potential for Research
On Friday, 23 October 2026, the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences hosted another colloQUTE lecture featuring Branislav Jansík, director of IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center. The lecture focused on the LUMI-Q VLQ quantum computer and its integration into Europe’s high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. Branislav Jansík presented the system’s capabilities, shared experience from its operation, and discussed the technological challenges that come with deploying and operating quantum computing hardware.
A key message was that quantum computers are not only systems to be built and maintained, but also experimental platforms designed to be explored. Researchers need opportunities to test quantum algorithms, experiment with real hardware, understand its limitations, and discover where quantum computing can offer new possibilities. The lecture illustrated this potential through interesting use cases and examples of research applications.
Participants also learned how Slovak researchers and students can apply for access to quantum computing resourcesand explore opportunities to test their own algorithms and research ideas on the LUMI-Q VLQ system. Connecting quantum computers with European supercomputing infrastructure opens new possibilities for collaboration and experimentation across the research community.
The event provided an opportunity to discuss both the practical challenges and the scientific potential of quantum computing, highlighting the importance of giving researchers access to emerging technologies and the infrastructure needed to explore them.
Through the colloQUTE series, QUTE continues to support expert knowledge exchange and strengthen connections within the quantum technology community, bringing researchers closer to the systems and opportunities shaping the future of computing.
